Focal Flame Photography, a family-owned Madison, Wisconsin-based photography and video production firm, is seeking a part-time Assistant Photographer/Editor. This entry-level position involves capturing and editing photos in a dynamic, engaging environment during endurance sports events (running events, triathlon, cycling races, etc.), as well as assisting other Focal Flame creative professionals with photography and video production jobs.
Principal Duties
Assisting our event team including capturing and editing photos of participants at endurance sporting events (running, cycling, triathlons, etc). This will require availability on most weekends, and potentially Mondays and Fridays.
Assisting with commercial photography and portrait photography assignments.
Assisting with video projects including pre-production planning, production (shooting), and post-production (editing).
Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
Relevant photography education and experience.
Ability to adapt quickly to changing conditions (e.g., inclement weather during outdoor events) and to navigate varied terrain for extended periods of time.
Ability to lift and carry at least 25 lbs.
Availability to work during weekends and evenings, including day-long and/or overnight travel.
Ownership of/experience with prosumer-level camera body and lenses including 70-200mm f/2.8 and 24-70mm f/2.8 preferred, but not required.
Preferred skills, knowledge and/or experience
Positive and effective verbal and interpersonal communication skills with clients and colleagues.
Love of the craft and enthusiasm for continual learning. Be curious!
Experience/comfort with Apple OS X, familiarity with Adobe Lightroom, and Apple Final Cut Pro.
Experience with off-camera flash (manual flash control, industry-standard lighting systems, etc.)
Sony camera experience preferred.
Hours: Vary (part-time); seasonal peak from spring through fall. As business grows, additional opportunities will be available to staff.
Compensation: Commensurate with experience. All hourly wage rates at Focal Flame Photography meet or exceed the City of Madison Living Wage under City of Madison Ordinance 4.20 (for 2026, the Living Wage is $16.50).
